Obviously, this is a big mistake. As Bullough (2017) tells us, “the contrast between a sign and its immediate background is the primary determinant of one’s ability to detect the sign, perhaps more than size.” In other words, if you want your sign to stand out and be seen, it needs to contrast sharply with its immediate background and surroundings. Thus, if your sign is displayed against a red bricked wall, try to incorporate high-contrast colors, like white, cyan, mint-green, and gray. Using ruddy-red for the font in your sign design would be a mistake, negatively affecting readability and greatly reducing the odds of your sign being spotted.
